Life as a growing lion cub requires plenty of playtime, and Zoo Knoxville’s Bisky has a care team making sure he has toys worthy of a young lion.
But these aren’t ordinary toys.
Zoo Knoxville’s animal care team creates enrichment items designed to keep Bisky active, curious and engaged while encouraging the natural behaviors of a lion. That means giving him opportunities to investigate, pounce, bite, tug and, of course, test just how tough a new toy might be.
The toys have to be built with a lion in mind. Materials must be safe, durable and interesting enough to capture Bisky’s attention — no small assignment when the recipient comes equipped with powerful paws, sharp claws and growing teeth.
Enrichment is an important part of animal care at Zoo Knoxville. While visitors get the fun of watching Bisky play, the activities also provide physical exercise and mental stimulation.
And Bisky appears happy to do his part.
Give a lion cub something new to investigate, and chances are he’ll figure out exactly what to do with it.
