We are saddened to share the news of the passing of Tex, one of our beloved Aldabra tortoise residents. Though he may not have been as widely known as Big Al, Tex was just as deeply loved by his caregivers.

Believed to be well over 160 years old, Tex was the oldest resident at Zoo Knoxville. He arrived from Texas in 1995 and spent many years at Tortoise Trails, where guests had the chance to get to know him up close.

Tex loved people. One of his longtime caregivers described him as a shining star, sharing that he would climb into your lap if you let him. He thrived on interaction, whether enjoying a leafy treat or a hug from one of his many admirers. He spent decades as an incredible ambassador for his species.

Tex leaves behind a lasting legacy through the connections he helped create and the awareness he inspired about tortoise care and conservation. He will be greatly missed.
