In today’s competitive landscape, some people, organizations, and companies stand out by serving the community or customer by going ‘Above and Beyond’ expectations.

Duane Kurisu created Kahauiki Village, a public-private-partnership that built one of the most successful and forward-thinking communities for homeless families with children in the country. This project, situated on 11.3 acres between Sand Island and Keehi Lagoon Park on the island of Oahu,  serves as an inspiration and a model for what can be achieved when a community goes Above & Beyond with a shared vision of ending homelessness. Phase 1 built thirty homes.  Phase 2 will have 114 homes, eventually housing over 600 adults and children.

Kurisu summarized key components that make a project like Kahauiki Village successful:

  • Emergency Proclamation – Having an emergency proclamation in place, infrastructure could happen at a quicker pace. The governor of Hawaii issued such a proclamation.
  • Public/Private Partnerships – While government involvement is important, securing the private sector’s buy-in is critical for success.
  • Focus on a particular group – Kahauiku Village focused on homeless families with children.
  • Create a sustainable off-grid community – Kahauiku Village is the first off-grid community in the world.
  • Ensure off-site improvements to the area – City and county government provides utilities, internet, and child care services.
