Mrs. Jerry L. Chevallier, 88, of Maryville, Tennessee, passed away on March 20, 2024. She was a woman of high achievement.
She graduated from Louisiana College in 1957 where she was the first woman elected as student body president, the first woman from Louisiana College listed in the Who’s Who of American Colleges and was selected by the faculty as the best all-around student in the senior class.
She was a professional teacher for many years, and together with her husband, the late Rev. R. Hershel Chevallier, led Baptist churches in Louisiana, North Carolina and Tennessee, including Cumberland Baptist Church in Knoxville for 25 years.
In addition to the regular duties of a pastor’s wife, Mrs. Chevalier also volunteered with various refugee resettlement organizations, taught English as a second language to new arrivals and personally helped and befriended immigrant families. Later in life, she was a member of Monte Vista Baptist Church of Maryville and deeply involved in various ministries and organizations that support people in need, with an emphasis on women. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2024, at Monte Vista Baptist Church; the family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. at the church.
