Ruby Lu, Brave and True by Lenore Look is the first book in a chapter book series about a spirited Chinese-American girl named Ruby Lu, who navigates everyday adventures like backyard magic shows, Chinese school, and family life with her parents, grandparents, and baby brother, Oscar. The story follows Ruby as she deals with challenges like her brother spilling her secrets and her parents not letting her drive, while also celebrating the fun parts of her life, like visiting Chinatown and performing magic. The series is known for its multicultural themes and relatable, humorous portrayal of a young girl’s life.

This is the first book in a series that includes Ruby Lu, Empress of Everything and Ruby Lu, Star of the Show

Author Lenore Look draws on her experiences growing up as a Chinese American and those of an American visiting China to tell stories that balance individuality and tradition.

Look’s first picture book, Love as Strong as Ginger, draws on memories of the author’s grandmother, who worked in a factory in Seattle during the 1960s and 1970s.

Two other books, Henry’s First-Moon Birthday and Uncle Peter’s Amazing Chinese Wedding, both follow Jen’s struggles to deal with the changes occurring in her life.
