Katrina Elizabeth DiCamillo is a two-time Newbery Medal winner who has authored over 25 novels, including Because of Winn-Dixie, The Tiger RisingThe Tale of Despereaux,  and Flora & Ulysses, with the last two novels being the winners of the Newbery Medal.

Her stories often confront themes of loss, while providing joy and redemption.

One of my favorite books to read to students was Because of Winn-Dixie, the story of 10-year-old India Opal Buloni, who moves to a new town and adopts a stray, scruffy dog she names Winn-Dixie. The dog helps lonely Opal make friends, connect with her preacher father, and navigate themes of friendship, forgiveness, and loss over one summer
