This gull rides the wind near our small ship as we sailed Norway’s archipelago of Svalbard. Well north of the Arctic Circle, the polar bear population exceeds the humans. The snow-covered mountains, though out of focus, give the image a sense of location and a feel for the harsh environment. If you have the ability to control your focus area, an interesting background can make a simple subject into a complete story.
