Most people know that having a good credit score is important, but many don’t realize just how many areas of life it can affect. Your credit score is far more than a number tied to borrowing money. It can influence whether you’re approved for a mortgage or apartment, the interest rate you’ll pay on a car loan and even whether you’re hired for certain jobs. Understanding how your credit score works is one of the smartest financial decisions you can make.

A credit score generally falls between 300 and 850. Scores of 800 to 850 are considered exceptional, while 740 to 799 are very good. A score between 670 and 739 is considered good, 580 to 669 is fair, and anything below 580 falls into the poor category. More than one in five Americans have a credit score of 800 or higher, showing that strong credit is an achievable goal with responsible financial habits.

Several factors determine your score, but one stands above the rest: payment history. It accounts for 35% of your score, making it the single most important factor. Even one missed or late payment can significantly lower your credit rating. The amount you owe compared with your available credit makes up another 30%. Financial experts recommend keeping credit card balances below 30% of each card’s limit whenever possible. Length of credit history contributes 15%, while the types of credit you use and new credit inquiries each account for 10%.

A strong credit score can save thousands of dollars over time. Mortgage rates can vary by as much as 1.5 percentage points based on your credit, potentially increasing the monthly payment on a $200,000 home loan by as much as $200. Credit scores also play a role when financing a vehicle. Landlords frequently review credit reports before approving rental applications, and utility companies, cable providers and cell phone carriers often check credit before opening new accounts. Some employers also review credit reports as part of the hiring process.

Improving your credit doesn’t happen overnight, but consistent habits make a difference. Pay every bill on time, reduce outstanding balances, avoid closing multiple credit cards unnecessarily and be cautious about applying for new credit too often. Small, responsible financial decisions today can build a stronger credit profile, save money over the long term and create opportunities when life’s biggest purchases come along.
