In between torrential downpours and sweltering heat waves, Knoxville trudges along through one of the most bipolar summers seen in recent memories. But the consistency of the city remains in its guests, its creators, and its people, who continue to show up through rain or shine.
AJ Lee & Blue Summit – Bijou Theater (July 24, 7 p.m.) Roots risers often come through our corner of the south, and AJ Lee & Blue Summitt are no different. As they continue to blaze their trail through the bluegrass scene, paying homage to one of its areas of origin seems like a no-brainer.
DJ Soularia – Maker Exchange (July 24, 8 p.m.) Tavern Notes is back as downtown will be soundtracked by some record spinning during its flagship maker market. Equipped with dozens of vendors, local creators will have their items on display while listening to music from Knoxville’s most distinguished live performers.
Beard & Bearder – Wild Wing Cafe (July 24, 9 p.m.) A night of old classics and new favorites awaits at Wild Wing Cafe. Co-hosted by Tommie John and Ben Shuster, get ready to hear some show-stopping vocals hidden behind these mountains of facial hair. Farragut is getting its own live music circuit this weekend, complete with a side of fries.
Christmas in July – The Bark Knoxville (July 25, 1 – 4 p.m.) A spin on the holidays is here for furry friends around town. In partnership with Adopt A Golden Knoxville, The Bark will be home to several adoptable dogs under their Christmas tree and equipped with a slew of other festive activities. An entry fee of $12 per dog will be required for admission.
Shinedown – Food City Center (July 25, 7 p.m.) One of the leading hardcore bands of the 2000’s is gracing Knoxville with an appearance for what’s set to be an unforgettable evening. Selling millions of records and tickets alike, Shinedown has become a staple for rock fans and head thrashers nationwide. As a hub for hardcore music, Knoxville seems to know their tune well.
Newsies Jr. – Knoxville Children’s Theater (July 24 – 26, multiple times) The sight of a newspaper boy sitting on the street flailing today’s edition around might be archaic, but the sentiment behind the work and what’s worth fighting for is still very much prevalent. A shortened take on the 2012 Broadway musical, “Newsies, Jack Kelly rallies his fellow newsies to protest their employer and learn how to rally around a common goal.
Sew It Sell It Market Day – The Bottom (July 25, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.) On Saturday, The Bottom will be training Knoxville’s next set of makers through a workshop centered around self-reliance and highlighting creativity. Students ages 12 through 17 will sew and sell their own unique items. Admission is completely free.
Blues Cruise – Star of Knoxville Riverboat (July 26, 4 – 7 p.m.) A Sunday wind down can always include some live music. The Star of Knoxville Riverboat will set sail for a few hours of jams and relaxation, as the sound of the blues floats down the river and eases those Sunday scaries. Tickets are $35 for non-members and $30 for members.
