Week 5 brought region matchups, shutouts and several convincing victories as Knoxville-area high school football moved deeper into the season.
Powell remained perfect with a 42-0 shutout of Karns. The Panthers improved to 5-0 after opening the season with wins over Anderson County, Farragut, Halls and William Blount.
Central also kept its unbeaten season rolling, defeating Clinton 48-7. The Bobcats improved to 5-0 and have scored 118 points over the past two games after a 70-0 victory over Campbell County last week.
Those two unbeaten teams are now headed toward a major Week 6 matchup: Powell travels to Central on Thursday, Sept. 24.
Gibbs handed South-Doyle its first loss of the season, winning 28-7 in an important region matchup. South-Doyle entered the night unbeaten after victories over Austin-East, Karns, Heritage and Carter.
Hardin Valley started the week’s action Thursday with a 48-7 win over Bearden. Maryville shut out Farragut 49-0, while West rolled past Campbell County 56-13.
Fulton continued its turnaround with a 37-17 victory over Heritage. After starting the season 0-3, the Falcons have now won two straight.
Halls earned its first victory of the season, defeating William Blount 48-14. Austin-East also posted a convincing win, beating Brainerd 41-6.
Among the area’s private schools, CAK defeated Silverdale 44-13, while Grace Christian topped Webb 45-10. Concord Christian’s three-game winning streak ended with a 50-14 loss to Middle Tennessee Christian. Knoxville Catholic fell to MBA, 34-7.

Five weeks into the season, the schedule is beginning to separate contenders as region races take shape across East Tennessee.
For Knoxville-area fans, Week 6 already has a marquee matchup circled: unbeaten Powell at unbeaten Central on Thursday night.
