High school football is back, and Week 1 brought plenty of action — and a few nail-biters — across the Knoxville area.
West opened its season with a 21-6 win over Bearden, while Hardin Valley rolled past Karns, 49-0. Central slipped past Dobyns-Bennett, 30-29, in one of the night’s closest finishes.
South-Doyle defeated Austin-East, 41-19, while Northview Academy edged Carter, 21-19. Gibbs also started strong with a 52-18 victory over Union County.

Just down the road, one of East Tennessee’s biggest rivalries provided the night’s thriller. Alcoa held off Maryville, 43-42, in the latest chapter of the Battle of Pistol Creek.
Week 1 isn’t quite finished. Several Knoxville-area teams have Saturday games, including Farragut against Sevier County, Knoxville Catholic against Riverdale, Fulton against Macon County and CAK against Concord Christian. Check TSSAA Sports for finals from Saturday.
