A trip through an antique store can turn into a history lesson without warning. While visiting Clinton Antique Store, the Second Hand Sisters spotted this unusual tool resting on a table. Naturally, we had to stop.
It has a smooth wooden handle and several wide, triangular metal blades that flare outward. It looks sturdy enough for serious work, but exactly what kind of work?
Our first thought was that it belonged in a kitchen. Then we wondered if it might have been used in a garden, workshop or even on a farm. The more we looked at it, the more possibilities came to mind — and the less certain we became.
That’s what makes browsing antique stores so much fun. Among the furniture, dishes and collectibles are objects that were once ordinary parts of everyday life. Their purpose would have been obvious to the people who used them, but a generation or two later, they can leave the rest of us scratching our heads.
