Hip or knee pain can gradually change the way people live — making it harder to exercise, travel, work around the house or simply enjoy everyday activities.

Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance East Tennessee is offering a free community education program to help people better understand why joints hurt and what can be done about it.

“Hip & Knee Pain: What You Need to Know” will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, at the Life Event Center, 1404 Tuckaleechee Pike in Maryville.

Dr. Nathaniel Koutlas of TOA East Tennessee will lead the program.

Koutlas will discuss common causes of hip and knee pain and ways people can protect their joints. He will also explain nonsurgical treatment options for joint pain and discuss advances in total joint replacement.

For people who have been dealing with persistent pain, another important question will be addressed: How do you know when it may be time to consider surgery?

The program is designed to give participants information about the range of options available rather than focusing solely on surgical treatment.

Attendees will also have an opportunity to ask questions during a Q&A session and connect with Koutlas and members of the TOA team.

The program is free, but space is limited and advance registration is requested.
