What happened to the man I was married to for one day? This is the central question of Rosie Walsh’s The One Day You Were My Husband.
The story begins in 2010 on a beautiful beach in Thailand. Carrie and Johan are celebrating their wedding with strangers when armed men arrive and arrest Johan. He is charged with a drug offense and refuses to see Carrie despite her pleas for answers.
Twelve years later in 2022, Carrie is the wife of Robin and mother to six-year-old twins. She left her promising career as a surgical intern in London when the twins were born prematurely and moved her family back to her hometown along the English moors.
Now she is ready to return to her career in surgery and has the opportunity to study with her mentor in Stockholm. While researching short-term rentals, she sees a familiar face. Johan. He was released from prison! Why did he or his family not contact her?
Walsh unravels Carrie and Johan’s stories through flashbacks in London, Thailand, 2022, Dartmoor, England, and Stockholm. The novel is a slow-burn story until the last quarter of the book, and the pace picks up significantly. I wonder if you will predict the plot twist.
Part love story. Part mystery. Part thriller. The genre does not matter. You will not be able to turn the pages fast enough.
