Services are set for noon today (10/21) at Greater Warner Tabernacle AME Zion Church, 3800 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., for a remarkable woman – educator, entertainer, world traveler and Knoxville native.
Giovana Brabson Kingsberry attended Mountain View and Fair Garden elementary schools, Park Jr. High and Holston High School. Her family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until noon at the church.
The young Giovana received a full scholarship in music to Tennessee Tech. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in music education, then obtained master’s degrees in secondary education and curriculum and instruction. She began work on her doctorate at Milligan College, and married Myron Kingsberry. They raised five children.
She got an early start in music, organizing neighborhood children for performances at Chilhowee Park. She spent most of her working life in Europe, teaching for the Department of Defense for over 40 years. Also, she was lead singer for several bands and directed gospel choirs. She sang back-up for performers including Michael Jackson, Chaka Khan, Elton John and Tom Jones. And she attended the inauguration of President Barak Obama. Hers was a life well-lived.
