Fountain City Presbyterian experienced an incredibly moving event this past Sunday afternoon. The Reverend Susan Balfour was installed as permanent pastor of the century-old church!
The Presbyterian service was scheduled several times, but circumstances and weather necessitated a reschedule, which ultimately turned out perfectly on Sunday. She has been serving as pastor since the fall.
Trying to encapsulate the installation in words is a disservice, because after witnessing the program in person, no words can truly describe it.
Several pastors from all around the region and beyond participated in the service. The program included bagpipes, prayers, songs, and statements of faith by the participants as well as a sermon begun in song by the Reverend Dr. Tijuana Gray from Connecticut.
Reverend Balfour answered questions about her profession of faith, her thanksgiving for baptism, and constitutional questions regarding the office, followed by promises of support and grace from the congregation.
The service was followed by a Scottish meal for all in attendance, with some participants wearing their Scottish attire.
