Powell minister Jerry Cox passes away

Funeral services will be held Friday (6/15) for the Rev. Jerry E. Cox, 75, longtime pastor of Powell Church of God, who died June 11.

Mr. Cox and his wife, Beverly, have pastored the Powell church for nearly 38 years.

According to his obituary, the Rev. Cox was called “grandbuddy” by many including his seven grandchildren. He helped found the Knox County Sheriff’s Chaplain Corps where he served as coordinator. He also served as a Knoxville Police Department chaplain.

Mr. Cox was preceded in death by father, Rector “Red” Cox; mother, Grace Cox; brother, Jack Cox; and sister, Margaret Buford. He is survived by his spouse of 44 years, Beverly Dye Cox; daughter, Tammi Vega; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Jihan Cox; grandchildren, Elias, Nissi, Josiah, Eva, Evi, Nehemiah “Jack,” and Ezra; a host of extended family, his Powell Church of God family, and many friends.

The family will receive friends from 5-7:30 p.m. Friday June 15, at Parkwest Church of God. A funeral service will follow with the Rev. Michael Cox officiating. The family and friends will meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 16, at Powell Church of God, 8109 Sharp Road, Powell, and travel in procession to Greenwood Cemetery for an 11 a.m. graveside service.
