Powell Middle School sets open house for grades 7-8

Powell Middle School open house for parents of 7th and 8th graders is Thursday, August 24, 2023, at the school. This is not a drop-in event. Parents will meet at 6 p.m. in the gym for a presentation by administrators. Then parents will follow their child’s academic schedule, ending at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Jack Dale will present the Knox County Schools family life program to 8th grade parents in Room 186 at 5:30 p.m.

Students are welcomed to attend classes with their parents. The school is at 3329 W. Emory Road.

Meet the administrators:

Denise Watts is executive principal and is new to Powell Middle School this year. She and her husband, Eric, have a daughter, Adeline, 13. Watts started her career in education in 2004 at Central High School where she taught social studies.  She then taught at Powell High School. After teaching for 10 years, Watts became an instructional coach at Austin-East Magnet High School.  She earned her education specialist degree from the University of Tennessee after which she became an assistant principal at Austin-East for six years.  From 2021-2023, Watts was the Class of 2025 principal at Bearden High School.

Ginny Powers is the 6th grade principal. She is a lifelong Powell resident who has spent the past 29 years at Powell Middle School – 17 as a teacher and 12 as an administrator. Her two daughters attended Powell schools.

Dr. Brad Smith is the 7th grade principal. He earned his doctorate in education from Lincoln Memorial University and has been a grade level administrator at Powell Middle since 2022, and was at Farragut High from 2019-22. Smith was a business teacher at Farragut High from 2015-19 and he currently is an adjunct professor at LMU. He and his wife, Jenny, have a daughter, Sloan.

Glen Price is 8th grade principal and athletic director. He and his wife are both educators in Knox County Schools and both are artists. They have two children. He started teaching in 1998 at Central High School (intern). He then worked as an art teacher in the Nashville area from 1999-2003, and he came to Gresham Middle School as an art teacher in 2003. He was an assistant administrator at Gresham from 2010-20 and has been at Powell Middle since 2020.
