Charles R. Davenport, 78, died on October 2, 2022, at Sacred Ground Hospice in north Knox County. Family will receive friends Thursday, October 6, from 5-7 p.m. at Beaver Dam Baptist Church, 4328 E. Emory Road in Halls, with funeral service to follow at 7 p.m. Burial will be at Lynnhurst Cemetery Friday, October 7, at 11 a.m., meeting at the graveside at 10:45 a.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to Friends of the Knox County Public Library.

Known as “Mr. D” at Halls Elementary School, he got generations of kids and families interested in reading. His obituary concluded: Charles will always be remembered as a teacher of children and a builder of libraries.

Mr. Davenport was appointed by the Knox County Commission to serve on the Knox County Public Library Board of Trustees where he was a member for three years and president of the board for 15 years. During his tenure, 10 new neighborhood branch libraries were built. He served as the interim director of the Knox County library system prior to current director Myretta Black’s appointment.

Mr. Davenport was a member of the Civil Air Patrol having served as vice commander of the southeast region and special advisor to the National Commander of Civil Air Patrol, among other honors.
