Pellissippi State Community College Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Rushton Johnson has been appointed to the Commission on Professional Learning and Leadership Capacity at the American Association of Community Colleges, a national role that will help shape leadership development and workforce strategies for community colleges across the country.
Johnson will serve on the commission through June 2029.
The Commission on Professional Learning and Leadership Capacity is one of six commissions within the American Association of Community Colleges. Each commission includes approximately 32 members and is charged with providing strategic, forward-looking guidance on the most significant opportunities and challenges facing the nation’s community colleges.
In his new role, Johnson will help advise the association on leadership development and faculty upskilling while contributing to frameworks for succession planning. The commission’s work is designed to ensure community colleges continue developing adaptive, innovative leaders who are prepared to meet the evolving needs of students, institutions and the workforce.
Johnson said he is honored to have the opportunity to serve.
“The future of community colleges will be shaped by leaders who are willing to collaborate across institutions, challenge conventional thinking and remain relentlessly focused on expanding student opportunity and strengthening communities,” he said.
He also emphasized the importance of representing Pellissippi State at the national level while working alongside higher education leaders from across the country.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to represent Pellissippi State on the national stage, to learn from outstanding colleagues across the country and to contribute to conversations that will strengthen leadership, advance workforce development and improve student success for community colleges nationwide,” Johnson said.
Johnson’s appointment recognizes both his leadership at Pellissippi State and his commitment to advancing student success. Through the commission’s collaborative work, members will help identify innovative solutions that strengthen institutions, prepare future leaders and support the continued growth of community colleges nationwide.
His participation also provides Pellissippi State with a voice in national discussions focused on leadership excellence, workforce development and the future of higher education, while bringing new ideas and best practices back to benefit the college and the students it serves.
Pellissippi State Community College is a public community college based in Knox and Blount counties in Tennessee and operated by the Tennessee Board of Regents. The college operates four campuses: Hardin Valley, Blount County, Strawberry Plains, and Magnolia Avenue.
