‘Music on Main’ arrives Sunday

Music on Main will bring blues, soul, funk and oompah music to the streets of downtown Knoxville on Sunday, Oct. 2. First Baptist Church, 510 W. Main St., is hosting the family-friendly event on its lawn and adjoining Main Street.

First Baptist typically offers an outdoor music event in the fall, such as the popular Bluegrass & Barbecue. This year’s musical genres will head in a different direction.

The fun kicks off at 5 p.m. with the Oompah Band from Concord United Methodist Church. The playful, Old World-style ensemble will deliver the lighthearted sounds evocative of Germany and Oktoberfest celebrations.

At 6 p.m., Mighty Blue will take the stage with a blend of blues, rock, funk and soul. The veteran band won the Regional International Blues Challenge in August 2017 and represented East Tennessee at the IBC finals in Memphis in January 2018.

Mighty Blue features Chelsea Samples on vocals, “Super” Dave Eckman on saxophone, Joel Seaton on bass, Bobby Dean on drums, Jamie Cameron on lead and slide guitar, and Michael James on guitar (the latter four also contribute vocals).

In addition to music performances, the event will offer a variety of kid and adult activities, including games, henna tattooing and caricatures. Admission is free.

Food trucks will be parked on Main with a variety of dinner and dessert options to purchase.
