Memorial Saturday for retired music educator

A memorial service honoring and remembering Walter H. McDaniel Jr. will be held Saturday, May 20, 2023, at 10 a.m. at The Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Knoxville. The family will receive friends following the service.

Mr. McDaniel passed away last year in Waco, Texas, at age 86.

He was assistant director of bands at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville from 1968-88 and was an associate professor of music education. Bands under his direction performed in concert halls, football stadiums and at five Presidential Inaugurations in Washington, D.C. In 1984, he charted the formations and drills for the 800-piece marching band at the Opening Ceremony of the Los Angeles Olympics.

Mr. McDaniel was the band director at Lebanon High School in Tennessee from 1958-62 and at Lenoir City High School from 1962-68. Throughout his career, he was active in professional associations. He received the Pride of the Southland Band lifetime member award in 2019. His full obituary is here.

The Walter and Hannah McDaniel Band Scholarship Endowment was established in 2014 to offer financial aid to members of the Pride of the Southland Band. Memorials may be made to this endowment at UT Foundation, 1525 University Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37921.
