Knoxville-area high school athletes turned in notable performances on the volleyball court and soccer field last week as fall sports moved deeper into the season.
KnoxTNToday’s weekly high school sports roundup looks beyond Friday night football to recognize teams and athletes competing in other sports across the Knoxville area.
West volleyball scores pair of district wins
West had a productive week in district volleyball, defeating Hardin Valley Academy 3-1 on Sept. 8 and Farragut 3-0 on Sept. 10.
Sandwiched between the two district victories was a 3-0 loss to Webb School of Knoxville on Sept. 9.
The two district wins improved West’s reported record to 9-3 following the Farragut match. West had also swept Bearden 3-0 earlier in September.

Two nights later, Hardin Valley Academy responded with a 1-0 victory over rival Farragut.
Sara Lopez provided the game’s only goal almost immediately, heading the ball into the net in the second minute. From there, the Lady Hawks protected the advantage and kept Farragut off the scoreboard for the remainder of the match.
Hardin Valley’s athletic site also reports that the school’s junior varsity team defeated Farragut 3-0 that evening.

Webb continues strong start

West entered the Webb game with a 5-2-1 record that included victories over Central, Clarksville, McCracken County, Oak Ridge and Chattanooga Christian.

Performance of the Week: Hardin Valley girls soccer
The KnoxTNToday Performance of the Week goes to Hardin Valley Academy girls soccer.
After losing a tight 2-1 contest to Central on Tuesday, the Lady Hawks had little time to dwell on it. Two days later, they faced rival Farragut and Lopez’s second-minute header gave HVA the lead.
The Lady Hawks made that single goal stand for the remaining 78 minutes, earning a 1-0 district victory and a shutout against their rival.
