JoAnne Dickey dies at 88

JoAnne Dickey, 88, wife of former Tennessee football coach and athletic director Doug Dickey, died Wednesday in Jacksonville, Fla.

After a long illness, she succumbed to complications of Parkinson’s disease.

The Dickeys were in Knoxville from 1964 to 1969 and back again from 1985 through 2002. The family included sons Don, Dan, David and Daryl and daughter Jaren. Don and wife Angelia still live in Knoxville.

Mrs. Dickey was born in Daytona Beach. She was a graduate of the University of Florida. She taught school one year while her young husband was a quarterback for the Gators.

After that, she lived the life of a very busy mother and coach’s wife – in Fayetteville, Ark., in Knoxville and back in Gainesville.

In her spare time, she was an avid bowler, golfer, fisherwoman, Sunday school teacher and board member of the American Lung Association. She owed a home-based health and nutrition business.

Interment will be at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, in Daytona Memorial Park, Daytona Beach. A celebration of her life and legacy will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at Mandarin United Methodist Church in Jacksonville. Obituary here.
