Three Hardin Valley Academy seniors have been recognized by the College Board as a result of exceptional scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship qualifying text.

Tommy Banker and Ryan Hart have been named National Merit Semi-Finalists and Austin Garcia has been named a National Hispanic Scholar. Tommy and Ryan scored in the top one percent of approximately 1.6 million test-takers, and Austin scored in the top 2.5 percent of Hispanic and Latino test-takers, according to media liaison Stephanie Crichton.

The HVA library is partnering with UT’s Life of the Mind and the Knox County Public Library’s “big read” to host a community coffeehouse and book discussion from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19. Librarians Suzanne Sherman and Monica Elliott are encouraging students, their families, faculty and staff to read a common book and then join the community for coffee, dessert, a book discussion and breakout room activities.

The book is titled “Station Eleven” and was written by Emily St. John Mandel. Over 20 copies of the book are available for checkout at the HVA library. The author will be speaking at UT in November.
