Knox County Schools will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for a new elementary school in Northwest Knox County at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10, at 10515 Coward Mill Road.

Superintendent Bob Thomas will be in attendance along with members of the Board of Education, Mayor Glenn Jacobs and other elected officials.

The new school lies in District 6, represented on the school board by Betsy Henderson and on the county commission by Terry Hill.

The commission on June 22 approved the property purchase from Lillian J. Redmon for $2.35 million and, on July 26, OK’d a contract with The Christman Company for $24,220,250 for construction. Lewis Group Architects designed the school.

“The school is certainly needed,” Hill said. It will relieve overcrowding at Karns Elementary School and accommodate new homes in the fast-growing Hardin Valley area. It is scheduled to open in fall 2023.
