Get Out & Play: Bike Month

Carol EvansFeature

May is Bike Month! Ditch the car and make your bike part of your transportation system. It’s not only good for your health – it’s good for your mood to be out exercising and it’s good for the environment. More people on bicycles mean safer streets, healthier people, cleaner air and more livable communities.

Don’t have a bike? No problem. Try out Knoxville’s new Pace bike share program – with bikes located all around downtown, getting around by bike is now incredibly convenient. Imagine not having to search for a parking spot or walk three blocks from the parking garage. Just pull up right outside of your destination, hook up your bike to any public bike rack – and you are there in a jiffy.

Knoxville currently boasts more than 65 miles of greenway loops and trails. The Knoxville Bicycle Map will help you find and use these bike facilities, ride safely and connect to your destination by indicating bike lanes, signed bike routes, greenways and roads that are considered comfortable to ride.

I Bike KNX is offering several promotions this month to incentivize you to pedal more. Challenges include: most rides taken on a Pace bike, most personal bike trips logged via Smart Trips, most social/errand bike trips recorded via the I Bike KNX app, longest bike commute via either Smart Trips or the I Bike KNX app, log at least one bike trip or commute during May for a chance to win one of two prizes. Prizes include tune-ups, gift cards, bike lights, and helmets from local bike shops, $25 ride credits from Pace, and more. Visit https://www.ibikeknx.com/bikemonth for more details.

Whether commuting or playing, take a bicycle ride this month and enjoy your city and the view. Visit the Outdoor Knoxville event calendar for information on group rides and other upcoming activities.
