Funeral is Saturday for Capt. Roy Lee Sewell

North Tazewell Volunteer Fire Department Captain Roy Lee Sewell, 27, died Monday evening in a roll-over tanker crash while responding to establish a landing zone for a medical call. Captain Sewell was crushed inside of the cab, according to an announcement from the fire department.

He and his wife, Randi, have a 2-year-old daughter, Delta, and are expecting a baby boy, Everett, in about two months.

A celebration of life will be conducted Saturday, April 29, 2023, at 2 p.m. in the Claiborne High School auditorium with Pastor Scott Cannon officiating. Music will be provided by Ben, Melissa and Abby Dishner. Visitation will follow the services until 6 p.m.

The fire department has arranged a special escort to the school: All friends and emergency service vehicles are requested to line up at DeRoyal Industries (1211 SR-33 New Tazewell) between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 29. Personnel will walk across the street to Claiborne-Overholt Funeral Home and will load Captain Sewell for his final ride at 12:50. The procession is scheduled to depart the funeral home at 1 p.m. and travel to Claiborne High School for a Celebration of Life Service at 2 p.m. The full obituary is here.
