This grand eastern brown pelican was hanging at a harbor in Hatteras Village waiting for a handout from a nearby seafood shop.
Whenever I see one of these magnificent birds it reminds me of a silly childhood rhyme our grandfather told us that sent us children to giggling. Mostly because it was a way for us to get to say “hell” and not get in trouble for it. There are different variations of it, but the way he said it was this:
A funny bird is the pelican.
His beak can hold more than his belican.
He can hold in his beak enough food for a week,
But I don’t see how in the helican.
