This lovely photo of a female red-bellied woodpecker was captured by Jon Gustin near his Norris home. He said she stops by fairly regularly. Woodpeckers of all varieties depend on the availability of dead or decaying tree snags for both food and shelter. So if you have the space but a tree that needs to go, cut it back to where it won’t hurt anything if it falls. Spare a snag for the birds. Mother Nature requires a bit of untidiness.
