Fishing show, disc-golf clinic among weekend events

The weekend is finally here, and that can mean only one thing – well, it can mean lots of things, but it’s time for the East Tennessee Fishing Show & Expo at the Knoxville Expo Center! The show runs 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. There’s a drawing for a boat on Sunday.

If you want to improve your disc-golf skills, there’s a free clinic with Zach Melton and Chris Dickerson at 6:30 p.m. today (Jan. 25) at Smoky Mountain Discs.

Friday, Jan. 25

Wilderness Emergency Medical Responder Refresher – Jan. 25-27: 8 a.m., Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont. Cost: $455. Info: Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont at 865-448-6709. If you have taken Wilderness Emergency Medical Responder in the past and are due for a renewal, this program will satisfy the requirements to renew certification. Southern Appalachian Naturalist Certification Program (SANCP) – Jan. 25-27: 8 a.m., Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont. Cost: $356. We need your help removing trash and harmful invasive species along the Seven Islands Landing riverbank. Volunteers will be using hand tools and herbicide, so please bring sturdy clothes including long-sleeved shirts, work gloves & closed-toed shoes. We also suggest water and a snack. Join local expert Andrew Herrington as he breaks down the essence of “The Reality of Survival.” Participants will leave having an understanding of the reality of wilderness emergencies and how to avoid them. Andrew is a Wildlife Ranger in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and a Search and Rescue Team Leader. Work involves blowing leaves and removing debris from within the campground, and to address any fire rings and tent pads that need basic maintenance. Winter Tree and Shrub Identification Class: 10 a.m., House Mountain Natural Area. Cost $10. Info: TN Division of Natural Areas at 865-594-5601. Join regional ecologist, Lisa Huff, to learn how to recognize common forest trees of the Ridge and Valley province in winter. Learn to recognize common oaks, hickories, beach, sweetgum, Southern yellow pines and other trees and shrubs. We’ll focus on learning to recognize key field characteristics to make identifications, such as bark patterns, leaves, fruits and twigs. You’ll also receive instruction on how to use simple dichotomous keys to identify trees and shrubs in winter. Register online.

Each monthly walk is guided by a naturalist who can answer your questions about what you are seeing, on-going projects, future programs, and more. Hike Meigs Mountain to Lumber Ridge: 7:15 a.m., Alcoa Food City OR at the Townsend Wye at 7:45 AM. Free. Info: Smoky Mountain Hiking Club. Leader: Dale Potter, dalepotter55@gmail.com. This is an 11-mile shuttle hike starting at Jakes Creek in Elkmont to Meigs Mountain trail, across Meigs Mountain to Lumber Ridge and out at Tremont. We will climb 3,500 feet along the way with a stop at a cemetery before descending to Lumber Ridge. Rated moderate.

TVB Winter Gravel Series Ride: 11 a.m., North Boundary Trails in Oak Ridge. Free. Info: Tennessee Valley Bikes at 865-540-9979. We’ll ride about 12.6 miles with under 1,500-ft. elevation. There is some mixed gravel as well as the trail surface to test out different tire pressures and gear setup. Easy, no-drop ride open to all skill levels.
