Sometimes the most useful household tools aren’t found in the hardware store. They’re hiding in a kitchen drawer, wrapped around a bundle of mail or tucked inside a desk organizer.

Take the ordinary rubber band. It costs practically nothing, takes up almost no space and can solve several everyday frustrations.

Before you toss that rubber band from your newspaper or produce bundle, consider these clever uses.

Get a better grip on a stubborn jar

We’ve all encountered a jar lid that refuses to budge.

Wrap a wide rubber band around the edge of the lid. The rubber creates friction, giving your fingers a better grip as you twist.

This works especially well when your hands are dry or the lid is slippery. Just make sure the rubber band is wide enough to stay in place.

Keep your cutting board from sliding

A cutting board that moves while you’re chopping vegetables isn’t just annoying. It can be dangerous.

Place a wide rubber band around each end of a small cutting board so the bands make contact with the countertop underneath. They may provide additional traction.

For a more secure solution, especially with larger boards, place a damp kitchen towel or nonslip mat underneath.

Stop the spoon from disappearing

Ever had a spoon slide right into a bowl of batter or mixing ingredients?

Wrap a rubber band around the spoon handle, just above the point where it rests against the bowl’s rim. The band acts as a small stopper, helping prevent the spoon from slipping into the mixture.

Keep the band away from the food, and don’t use this trick with hot liquids.

Open a slippery bottle cap

Those small plastic bottle caps can be surprisingly difficult to twist, especially when your hands are wet.

Wrap a rubber band around the cap to create a nonslip surface. It can make opening a bottle of shampoo, lotion or household cleaner much easier.

Keep wrapping paper from unraveling

After wrapping a gift, there’s often a partially used roll of paper left behind.

Instead of reaching for tape that might tear the paper, slip a loose rubber band around the roll.

The paper stays neatly rolled until the next birthday or holiday. Avoid tight bands that could crease delicate paper.

Keep charging cords organized

If your desk drawer looks like a collection of tangled phone chargers, rubber bands can help.

Loosely coil each unplugged cord and secure it with a rubber band. Don’t wrap it tightly enough to bend or damage the cable.

A simple solution that makes finding the right cord much easier.
