The next generation of East Tennessee journalists will have an opportunity to sharpen their skills and explore the ethical responsibilities of visual storytelling, thanks to a $13,000 national grant.
The Front Page Foundation, an East Tennessee nonprofit supporting journalism education and press freedom, has received funding from the Society of Professional Journalists Foundation for a program focused on photojournalism ethics.
The initiative will provide training for students at the University of Tennessee and Pellissippi State Community College, helping future journalists understand the responsibility that comes with documenting events and telling stories through photographs.
Developed in partnership with the East Tennessee chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, the program will also recognize outstanding photojournalism in the region.
The local award was the third-largest among 12 grants totaling $100,000 awarded nationwide by the SPJ Foundation.
Competition was substantial. The foundation received 104 applications requesting a combined $2.1 million in funding. Projects were evaluated for their potential impact and their contributions to strengthening journalism.
Photojournalism carries responsibilities beyond capturing a compelling image. Journalists must consider accuracy, context, privacy and whether photographs fairly represent the people and events being documented. Those principles have become increasingly important as digitally manipulated and AI-generated images make it more difficult for audiences to distinguish authentic photographs from altered content.
The Front Page Foundation already supports journalism students through scholarships at UT and Pellissippi State. It also promotes professional development, First Amendment rights, transparency and ethical reporting.
The new grant extends that mission by investing in practical education for aspiring journalists while celebrating the work of photographers who document East Tennessee’s people, places and defining moments.
