The first October weekend brings a full slate of community events, from UT’s expanded Ag Day and downtown First Friday openings to Tennessee football and a Sunday gathering for four-legged friends.

Friday High Five

What five simple things could make this fall weekend feel well spent?

Fresh air, a shared meal, a conversation with someone you enjoy, one new experience and a little unhurried time can turn an ordinary weekend into a good one.

Today in History

  • Sept. 2, 1950: The first Peanuts comic strip by Charles M. Schulz appeared in seven newspapers.
  • Sept. 3, 1955: Captain Kangaroo premiered on CBS, beginning a long run as a familiar part of children’s morning television.
  • Sept. 4, 1957: The Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the first artificial satellite to orbit Earth, opening the Space Age.

Tennessee Trivia

Tennessee adopted an official state tartan in 1999 to recognize the important role of people of Scottish descent in the state’s history. The design uses green, blue, red, white and black.
