A spur-of-the-moment trip recently found us in the state of Maine. With little time to plan, we simply found our way around, exploring nearby sites and villages. In the harbor town of Camden, we discovered this beautiful and historic lighthouse, the Curtis Island Lighthouse in Penobscot Bay.

First built in 1834 during the presidency of Andrew Jackson at a cost of $4,500, the lighthouse was rebuilt around 1890 and raised to its current height of 30 feet. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Choosing this composition minimizing the lighthouse rather than a close-up image gives the viewer a sense of its scale within the larger landscape.  With a little more time to plan a trip out to the island for a tour of the lighthouse may be in the future.
