Construction is underway to expand and renovate the West Side Family Y. Senior program manager Bekah Grace said the changes will improve the experience of Y members in many ways.

“We’re focusing on three projects this year and will move to expanding the wellness center and aquatics center in 2019,” she said.

Spin Studio: There will be a brand-new spin studio with all-new cardiovascular equipment.

Child Watch: A fast-growing program for youngsters from 6 weeks to 6 years has doubled its space with more opportunities for interactive play.

Program Pavilion: The old pool building has been renovated for an outdoor pavilion, and work on a new pool is scheduled for phase 2, which will begin next year. Fall classes scheduled for the new pavilion included Taekwondo, Twinkle Toes Dance and the Move Well Today diabetes exercise program.

If you’ve not visited the West Side Family Y lately, now is a good time.

Additional improvements include a new stereo system in the aerobics studio.

New spin bikes have been ordered, as have 10 new pieces of cardio equipment for the existing wellness floor. These should be ready for use Jan. 1, Grace said.

The West Side Family Y has been serving the Knoxville area since 1969.

Completely renovated in 1999, the West Side branch is committed to providing services and programs that promote a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

The facility is at 400 N. Winston Road west of West Town Mall and adjacent to a city-owned park and greenway. Info: 865-690-9622.

Hours of operation are 5 a.m.-10 p.m. weekdays, 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturdays, and 1-6 p.m. Sundays. Child Watch hours are 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 8 a.m.-1 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday; 8:15-noon, Saturdays.

Nobody has said to wear your hard hat to work out at West Side Y (yet), but with construction buzzing, that’s probably just a matter of time. Check the Y’s Facebook and website for weekly updates.
