Herman Meredith, Spruce Up, Career/Job Fair

Sandra ClarkOur Town Neighbors, Powell

Herman Meredith, surely the best-known Republican in Powell, has sold his home and barbershop and moved to Tellico Plains.

He is living with his late wife’s, Wanda, brother and his wife, Steve and Joan Rogers of Tellico Plains. “They are like brother and sister to me,” said Herman.

Meredith hit the high mark on selling the home he bought in 1971. It is just off Emory Road – the house with multiple American flags and pre-election yard signs. He closed on September 30.

Judge Kyle Hixson swears in the 2020 Powell Republican Club officers: Herman Meredith, Martha Raper, Buddy Burkhardt and the late George Rogers.

He says Tellico Plains is just about 65 miles from Powell, but he is already missing his friends and patrons. You can stay in touch by calling him at 865-599-9832. Health concerns led to his decision to close shop and move. “The time had come to do something, and the good Lord worked it out perfectly.”

Before moving his shop to his home in 1971, Meredith cut hair “in the shopping center at the top of the hill” on Clinton Highway. He said he’s been cutting hair for 45 years and 3 months.

He joked that he was treasurer of the Powell Republican Club for an estimated 25 years, not because someone else couldn’t have done the job, but because banking regulations make it hard for a small club to change treasurers.

As treasurer, Herman sat by the door of the Shoney’s meeting room and collected dues and $1 raffle donations for a prize drawing. He was never shy.

The Powell Republican Club is one of, if not the oldest, GOP club in Knox County. Herman remembers attending in the late 1960s. He credits Bruce and Lillian Williams with being mainstays over the years.

And good friends as well. Lillian Williams posted this in the club’s most recent newsletter: As most of you may know, our treasurer has resigned because of health issues and has moved away with some relatives. Herman will certainly be missed by all. If you would, please be in prayer for him.
