Who is not drawn to the cooling mist of a waterfall on a hot summer day? As a photographer, one without visitors climbing all over is so much the better. Starting out at 6 a.m. makes that solitude a little easier to find.
The Great Smoky Mountains have many waterfalls, some easy to reach, and some take some scrambling and searching to find. Spruce Flats is a relatively easy hike so why did it take me three decades to “discover” this 30-foot waterfall? Now that I have been there, it will become a regular destination for me.

Shot on a tripod with a shutter speed of 2.5 seconds gives a soft look to the water, creating a sense of motion to the image. I like the way the water disappears behind the rocks and reemerges to flow out at the bottom of the picture.
