We’ve all been there. You’re visiting someone’s home, need a tissue, can’t find a trash can and don’t want to start opening cabinets like a detective investigating a crime scene.
Or perhaps you’re the host, answering the same questions all evening: Where’s the bathroom? What’s the Wi-Fi password? Where do I put my coat?
Here’s an Everyday Genius idea: Make what guests need easy to find without asking.
You don’t need a spotless house, matching towels or expensive decorations. A few thoughtful adjustments can make guests feel comfortable and save you work.
1. Give the bathroom a guest’s-eye inspection
Walk into your bathroom as though you’ve never been there.
Is there an extra roll of toilet paper in plain sight? A clean hand towel? A trash can that’s easy to find?
Consider placing a small basket on the counter with tissues, disposable floss picks and other simple necessities. Your guests won’t have to ask, and you won’t have to explain which cabinet holds the extra toilet paper.
2. Make your Wi-Fi password visible
Instead of spelling out a complicated password every time someone visits, write the network name and password on a small card.
Place it in the guest room or another convenient spot.
For an extra-clever touch, create a Wi-Fi QR code so visitors can connect by scanning it. Many phones offer ways to share Wi-Fi access without typing the password.
Just make sure you’re sharing your guest network rather than access you prefer to keep private.
3. Create an obvious landing spot
Guests often arrive juggling purses, jackets, phones, sunglasses and sometimes a casserole dish.
Give them a clear place to put their belongings.
A basket, empty chair or small table near the entrance can eliminate the awkward question, “Where should I put this?”
And if you’re hosting a gathering, clear a designated space for coats before the first guest arrives.
4. Think about nighttime navigation
Overnight guests may not know which hallway leads to the bathroom, especially in an unfamiliar house after dark.
A small night-light can make an enormous difference.
Check that pathways are clear of shoes, cords and other obstacles. Make sure guests can reach a light switch without stumbling across the room.
It’s a simple courtesy that also helps prevent falls.
5. Put together a five-minute welcome station
You don’t need to create a hotel experience. Just gather a few things that visitors commonly need.
A phone charging cable, a bottle of water, tissues and a note with the Wi-Fi information can make an overnight guest feel right at home.
If you’re expecting company for a holiday meal, designate a convenient place for drinks, napkins and extra utensils so guests can help themselves.
The guest-ready challenge
Before your next gathering, spend five minutes walking through your home from the perspective of someone visiting for the first time.
What would they have trouble finding? What might they hesitate to ask for? What could you make easier?
The Everyday Genius takeaway: Great hospitality isn’t about having the fanciest home. It’s about removing those little moments of uncertainty that keep people from feeling at home.
And if your guests can find the extra toilet paper without launching a search party, you’re already ahead of the game.
