Here’s a guide to the best youth-friendly happenings in the area from Wednesday, September 2, through Tuesday, September 8.
- Wednesday, Sept. 2 — Knoxville Smokies vs. Chattanooga Lookouts, 7 p.m., Knoxville Smokies at Covenant Health Park. The Smokies continue the home series through Sunday, with 7 p.m. games Wednesday-Saturday and a 2 p.m. Sunday game.
- Wednesday, Sept. 2 — Baby Bookworms and children’s storytimes. Knox County Public Library branches have numerous programs that morning. Options include Baby Bookworms at Powell and Farragut at 10:30 a.m., Toddler Storytime at Lawson McGhee at 10 a.m. and Preschool Storytime at South Knoxville at 10:30 a.m. Programs are geared to specific preschool ages.
- Saturday, Sept. 5 — Storytelling at the Ijams Nature Playscape, 10 a.m.-noon at Ijams Nature Center. This free family program combines stories in the woods with opportunities for nature play and, on some Saturdays, hands-on activities. Parking is $5 per vehicle and free for Ijams members.
- Tuesday, Sept. 8 — Museum Sprouts: Caravan of Camels, 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the McClung Museum. The free program is for infants through age 4 with their caregivers and includes a short museum experience and activity or craft. The Sept. 8 program explores a camel sculpture and includes making a camel. Registration is required.
- Tuesday, Sept. 8 — Afterschool Storytime, 3:30-4 p.m., South Knoxville Branch Library. Children ages 3-8 hear stories and then complete a related craft or activity. A parent or guardian must accompany children.
Ongoing all week of September 2 – September 8. While not scheduled at fixed times for youth groups (unless you check individual organizations), these places are great options any day of the week — call ahead for specific hours & classes:
- Muse Knoxville is an interactive children’s museum with daily sessions.
- Zoo Knoxville is open daily; special feeds/talks may have times posted onsite.
- Fort Kid @ World’s Fair Park is a play area with general hours of operation.
- Knox County Public Library often has weekly story times, LEGO clubs, craft sessions, and teen gaming nights. Check their weekly calendar.
