September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, which makes it a perfect time to remind children that one of the best adventures in town begins with a small card tucked into a wallet.
The American Library Association has celebrated the month since 1987, encouraging families to discover not only books but also the programs, technology, activities and other resources available through local libraries. For young readers, though, sometimes the best invitation to the library is another good book.
Start with Library Lion by Michelle Knudsen, illustrated by Kevin Hawkes. When a lion strolls into the library, librarian Miss Merriweather is not sure what to do. There are rules, of course, but there is no rule about lions. The warm, funny story gives children a library they will want to walk into themselves — and offers a gentle lesson about rules, friendship and knowing when helping someone matters most.
The Library Book by Tom Chapin and Michael Mark, illustrated by Chuck Groenink, turns a rainy day into a celebration. A trip to the library becomes anything but dull as books and familiar storybook characters bring the place to life. It is especially fun as a read-aloud before a family library visit.
For another choice, try The Library Fish by Alyssa Satin Capucilli, illustrated by Gladys Jose. A fish who lives in the library loves story time, books and even trips on the bookmobile. When a snowy day leaves the library empty, Library Fish sets out on an adventure of her own. The story captures something young readers quickly learn: Books can take you almost anywhere.
That may be the real gift of Library Card Sign-Up Month. A child does not need to know exactly what he or she wants to read before walking through the doors. Browsing the shelves is part of the fun.
This September, make getting — or using — a library card a family outing. Let the children wander, choose something unexpected and carry their own books to the checkout desk. The goal is not simply to leave with a stack of books. It is to have them asking when they can come back.
