Sunday Conversation: What sound says East Tennessee to you?

Some sounds are so familiar that we barely notice them until we haven’t heard them for a while.

For me, that’s one of the interesting things about living in East Tennessee. Our memories aren’t only tied to places. They’re tied to sounds.

Maybe it’s rain hitting a metal roof on a summer afternoon. It could be cicadas starting up in the evening, a screen door slamming at your grandparents’ house, or the whistle of a train somewhere in the distance.

For someone else, it might be the sound of a high school marching band on a Friday night, church bells on Sunday morning, or a creek tumbling over rocks in the Smokies.

Sometimes just hearing one of those familiar sounds can take us back years.

That’s what Sunday Conversation is about — those little things we share that make this place feel like home.
