Several precincts will have new locations for voting

Where to start? At its January 28 meeting, the Knox County Election Commission voted to move the polling place for four precincts and consolidate two additional precincts into one single precinct.

Cedar Bluff – Farragut – Halls – Karns. If you vote at one of these spots, listen up. You do NOT want to wait your way to the front of the line for the May 5 primary only to discover you’ve gotta hop in your car, drive to an entirely different place and stand in line again.

Quick tips

  • Avoid the hassle by Early Voting (April 15-30). Those locations will be posted later.
  • Enter your home address at KGIS here to learn both your precinct number and where to vote.
  • Howl at the moon by reading below.

Cedar Bluff area: Precinct 68 will vote at the Election Commission office at 1645 Downtown West Blvd., Unit 40. (These voters previously voted at Cedar Bluff Elementary School.) Voters in Precinct 67 will remain at Cedar Bluff Elementary.

Farragut area: Precinct 66SE will vote at Korean Church of Knoxville, 108 Farlow Drive, Knoxville. (These voters previously voted at Farragut High School.) Voters in Precinct 66SW will remain at Farragut High School.

Halls area: Precinct 61E will vote at Faithway Baptist Church, 4402 Crippen Road. (These voters previously voted at Halls High School.) Precincts 60 and 61W will remain at Halls High School.

Karns area: Precinct 63 will vote at Karns High School, 2710 Byington Solway Road. (These voters previously voted at Karns Elementary School.) Voters in Precinct 63N will remain at Karns Elementary School.

Consolidation in East Knox County: Precinct 77 (has voted at Asbury United Methodist Church) is no longer a precinct. It has merged with Precinct 78 and its voters will vote at Marbledale Baptist Church, 5935 Thorn Grove Pike. Asbury UMC is no longer a polling place.

Why do this? It’s to thin out the larger precincts for efficiency.

Chris Davis, administrator of elections, told me that it is not an effort to move out of schools for security and/or parking congestion. “The schools have been great to work with.”

Redistricting for state legislative seats plus county commission and school board has driven the odd numbers like 66SE and 66SW. Courts have held that districts must be of similar size; sometimes that means chopping one precinct into two or more to make the numbers work.

Thank goodness the EC staff has a handle on all of this.
