Litton’s Back Door: same great food for a quick lunch

Want Litton’s food without the wait? Just dash in the Back Door.

Kelly Litton has opened a lunch cafeteria line. Just grab a heavy-duty paper plate and choose from two meats and several vegetables. Eat in or carry out. The food is hot and ready. There’s no server, no tip and absolutely no wait.

Just be mindful of the times. The Back Door currently is open from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.

“It fills the gap between the grocery store (at-home cooking from scratch) and fast food,” said Litton. “It’s just another option for eating in Fountain City.”

Barry Litton is excited about sister Kelly’s new venture. “She gets face time with customers and even talks about the food she has prepared,” he said. Kelly Litton has managed the kitchen for years while Barry and his son, Erik, handle front-end duties at the popular eatery, located on Essary Road at Broadway, across from Fountain City Lake.

Last Thursday’s buffet included the regular Litton’s blue plate special – meatloaf – plus baked chicken and eight vegetables.

Kelly Litton buys vegetables from Pratt’s Market and directly from a few special farmers. She laughs while telling about Farmer Kitts, whose greens are in, and speculating on how long he can extend his season. “If I can, I’ll buy locally,” she said. “Then I’ll know where the corn and beans came from.” She had fresh shelly beans last week and the season’s last white half-runners.

“We’ll have local greens until the first hard freeze.”

All of Lynda Jones’ famous desserts and bakery products are available for purchase at the Back Door. “If we don’t have it back here, we’ll get it (from the front),” said Libby Corey. There’s a self-serve drink area and a range of tables from family-sized to single seating.

“This is a return to our roots,” said Kelly Litton. “We’ve got home-cooked food with no frills.”
