Knowing what is happening in local government shouldn’t require digging through meeting agendas, watching hours of video or trying to decipher government language.
That’s the idea behind TerryTalk, a new KnoxTNToday column featuring information from Knox County Commission Chair Terry Hill.
The column will focus on transparency — helping Knox County residents better understand the decisions, discussions and issues that affect their communities and their daily lives.
County government touches more areas of life than many people realize. Roads, schools, development, public safety, parks, property, services and the use of taxpayer dollars can all come before Knox County Commission. Yet important information can sometimes get lost in lengthy agendas, government documents and public meetings.
TerryTalk is intended to help close that gap.
Hill will use the column to share timely information about matters before the commission, explain issues residents may be hearing about and highlight county information the public needs to know. When appropriate, the column can also point readers toward meetings, resources and opportunities to become involved.
The goal is not to tell readers what to think. It is to give them more information so they can make their own informed decisions.
Transparency works best when government information is accessible, understandable and available before decisions are made — not simply after the fact. TerryTalk will provide another avenue for that communication.
KnoxTNToday’s role will remain the same: Uplift. Inform. Entertain. TerryTalk adds another source of community information by giving readers a direct look at county government from the chair of the Knox County Commission.
