Twenty-five years after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks changed the nation, the CAC Office on Aging’s AmeriCorps Seniors will bring the Knoxville community together for a morning of remembrance and service.
The 9/11 Day of Service will be held Friday, Sept. 11, from 9 a.m.-noon at the CAC Ross Building, 2247 Western Ave. in Knoxville. The event will honor those who lost their lives, those who responded and those whose lives were forever changed by the attacks.
The morning will include guest speakers, exhibits and information, and light refreshments.
Three speakers will bring different perspectives to the commemoration.
Jeremy Bond, a retired Air Force airman first class, will speak from 9:15-10 a.m. Bond was serving in the U.S. Air Force when the Sept. 11 attacks occurred and later participated in Operation Enduring Freedom. His career has also included work as a correctional counselor and hostage negotiator and more than a decade in software development. He currently serves as manager of enterprise architecture at TeamHealth.
Greg Roberts, a retired Tennessee Highway Patrol sergeant, will speak from 10:15-11 a.m. Roberts brings 40 years of experience in law enforcement and law enforcement support. He currently serves as interdiction coordinator for Appalachia HIDTA following 31 years with the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
Knoxville radio personality Kim Hansard, longtime co-host of The Marc & Kim Show on Star 102.1, will speak from 11:15 a.m.-noon. Hansard has been part of the morning show since 2001 and is also known for sharing her experience as a breast cancer survivor and for her community involvement.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle for KUB H2O To Go.
AmeriCorps Seniors works with people age 55 and older through RSVP, Senior Care Calls, the Foster Grandparent Program and the Senior Companion Program, putting their skills and experience to work addressing community needs.
