Knoxville’s historic homes are becoming outdoor theaters this fall as Movies at the Museums returns with six free films at six distinctive locations. Movies at the Museums is presented by Pellissippi State Community College.
The series opens Friday, Sept. 4, at Mabry-Hazen House with “The Goonies,” the 1985 adventure comedy about a close-knit group of children who discover a pirate treasure map and set out to find riches that could save their homes from foreclosure. The cast includes Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, and Ke Huy Quan early in their careers.
Doors at Mabry-Hazen House open at 7 p.m., giving visitors time to take self-guided tours of the museum before the movie begins at 8 p.m. Staff members will be available to answer questions.
The free series continues on Friday evenings through early October:
- 4 — “The Goonies,” Mabry-Hazen House
- 11 — “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” James White’s Fort
- 18 — “Herbie: Fully Loaded,” Farragut Museum
- 25 — “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” Blount Mansion
- 2 — “Ghostbusters,” Marble Springs State Historic Site
- 9 — “Up,” Historic Westwood
Admission is free, although donations are appreciated and help support the museums’ preservation work. Guests should bring lawn chairs, blankets or other items for comfortable seating. Concessions will be available at select locations. Because start times, special activities and rain plans may vary by site, moviegoers should check with the host museum before heading out.
Pellissippi State Community College is a public community college based in Knox and Blount counties in Tennessee and operated by the Tennessee Board of Regents. The college operates four campuses: Hardin Valley, Blount County, Strawberry Plains, and Magnolia Avenue.
