Some of the most important work happening across Tennessee rarely makes the headlines. It happens in classrooms, food pantries, parks, churches, hospitals and neighborhoods where volunteers quietly step forward to help others without expecting anything in return.
That’s exactly what the Governor’s Volunteer Stars Awards coordinated by Volunteer Tennessee celebrate each year.
The program recognizes exceptional Tennesseans who are making a lasting impact through volunteer service. Participating counties select both an adult and youth honoree, shining a light on people whose dedication strengthens their communities while inspiring others of every age to get involved.
The numbers tell an incredible story.
Nearly 1.9 million Tennesseans volunteer each year, contributing more than 134.7 million hours of service. If that time were measured in economic value, it would equal nearly $4 billion annually. Those figures represent far more than statistics. They represent meals served to families in need, students encouraged to succeed, homes repaired, parks cleaned, neighbors comforted and countless acts of kindness that make communities stronger.
Volunteers truly are the backbone of Tennessee.
The Governor’s Volunteer Stars honorees come from every walk of life. Some spend hours each week tutoring elementary school students. Others build homes alongside Habitat for Humanity, mentor young people, support veterans, assist seniors, organize food drives or work behind the scenes for local nonprofits. While their individual contributions may differ, they all share one thing in common: a willingness to give their time and talents where they’re needed most.
Their efforts often fill gaps that might otherwise go unmet. Many organizations simply couldn’t provide the same level of service without volunteers willing to invest their hearts alongside their hands.
Recognizing these individuals does more than celebrate personal achievement. It reminds all of us that volunteering doesn’t require extraordinary circumstances. It simply begins with saying “yes” to helping someone else.
East Tennessee has long been known for neighbors helping neighbors, and the Governor’s Volunteer Stars Awards reflect that same spirit across every corner of our state. By honoring those who serve, Volunteer Tennessee hopes to encourage even more people to discover the satisfaction that comes from making a difference.
Whether you can spare an hour a month or several days each week, there’s a place for every volunteer. And as Tennessee’s Volunteer Stars continue to prove, even the smallest act of service has the power to brighten a life, strengthen a community and inspire someone else to do the same.
