Union Baptist to build child care facility

Union Baptist Church has voted to build a child care facility on the church campus at 6701 Washington Pike in East Knox County.

State Rep. Harry Brooks, longtime member, will chair the fundraising. He estimates a $700,000 project for a 3,600- to 3,800-square-foot building. “We’re gathering information now; haven’t hired anybody.”

To kick off the fund drive, the church will host an event at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24. There will be food and Phil Campbell will entertain. Admission is free, but donations will be appreciated. There will also be a silent auction. Brooks encourages everyone to come and participate.

“We realize there is a need for a safe, faith-based facility for preschool children in our community,” said Brooks. “We further realize this is a big undertaking for our church. It will challenge and push us.”

The goal is to break ground this fall and have the facility ready to open by the time school starts in August 2018.
