When you enjoy hiking and the conditions are not conducive to epic marches into formidable terrain, you might want to scale back your ambition.
A Saturday evening in February on the Tennessee/North Carolina state line was such a time. Exiting Carvers Gap at the civil start of sunset in subzero temps with a camera around my neck portended a short jaunt.
The walk turned longer as the sky softened to meet the snowy countenance of the evergreens on Roan Mountain. Ten minutes turned into 30 then an hour and a half and twilight on Round Bald.
We all have our joys in life. I live for these moments where nature compels me to extend myself for its beauty.
